To be a Trained G
PS Dogs Ground Pounder, you must have completed our
basic training that includes: Grid Searching Techniques, Clue Awareness,
Basic Tracking, Knot Tying, Compass, and Topo Map reading. Training must
also include Crime Scene Preservation training with a deputy from the
Brookings County Sheriff's Department.  This training is only held once a
year.

Mounted Search and Rescue

Mounted Search and Rescue volunteers pay for and maintain their own
horses, trucks, trailers, and deploy when called by Law Enforcement, Fire
Department or any responsible authority to aid in the search for lost, injured
or missing persons. Teams may also assist in transportation of equipment
such as medical supplies, litters, GPS units, radios, etc. Mounted Search and
Rescue, often known as MSAR, is especially useful in heavily woods areas or
rough terrain. A team on horse back can cover a lot of ground very quickly.

Stephanie Hanson is from Toronto, SD and will be using two Quarter horses
for SAR, "Buck" and "Romeo".  They have completed Basic SAR training and
evaluations.

The Great Plains Search Dogs website was formed in order to provide
Law Enforcement with quick information on the nearest certified canine
teams in the state of South Dakota.

Individual canine/handler teams in the state of South Dakota can now
come together in order to obtain required liability insurance and
assistance from our (soon to come)  non-profit status. Refer to the
Teams page for information on member requirements.

All members of Great Plains Search Dogs or "GPS Dogs" have common
goals to:
  1. Provide certified volunteer canine teams to Law Enforcement
    agencies requesting assistance;
  2. Meet requirements for certified canine teams;
  3. Further the public knowledge of, interest in, and the use of
    volunteer search and rescue dogs;
  4. And to encourage and foster good relationships between "GPS
    Dogs" and legislative and law enforcement bodies.

Members incur all costs including mileage, equipment, pagers, and dog
expenses. We rely on donations from the community to continue
supplying this vital service.
